Taylor Swift Jokes About Kanye West Moment in Era Tour Concert

Taylor Swift reflects on her history with the MTV VMAs, alluding to Kanye West's interruption during her acceptance speech in 2009.

As the highly anticipated MTV Video Music Awards approach, Taylor Swift is taking a moment to reflect on her own history with the annual ceremony. One particular incident that stands out is when she was famously interrupted by Kanye West, now known as Ye.

During her Eras Tour stop in Mexico City on Sunday, Swift indirectly referenced this infamous pop culture moment. As she sat down to perform "Champagne Problems" from her 2021 album "Evermore," the audience began chanting her name repeatedly.

In response, Swift told the crowd, captured in video clips from the show, "It's the best way to be interrupted, by the way, just people chanting your name. It's really the only way to be interrupted -- and I would know."

For those who may need a reminder, Swift was accepting the best female video award at the 2009 MTV VMAs when Kanye West stormed the stage and declared that Beyoncé's "Single Ladies" deserved the honor more.

This incident sparked what many have described as a feud between Ye and Swift that has lasted for over a decade.

This is not the first time Swift has shown a sense of humor about this 14-year-old situation while on tour. Last month in Seattle, she burst into laughter while performing an acoustic version of "This Is Why We Can't Have Nice Things," a 2017 track that was rumored to be inspired by Ye.

"I can't even say it with a straight face," she confessed to the crowd after singing the line: "And here's to you, 'cause forgiveness is a nice thing to do."

It's worth noting that Ye's interruption of Taylor Swift's acceptance speech at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards has had a lasting impact on both their careers.

Earlier this year, actor Taylor Lautner, who presented the award to Swift in 2009 and was in a relationship with her at the time, shared his perspective on the situation. During a conversation with his wife, Tay Lautner, on "The Squeeze" podcast, the "Twilight" star revealed that he was unaware the Kanye incident was not a skit until after it happened.

Lautner initially thought the interruption was a planned and rehearsed skit, questioning why Kanye West would jump on stage to interrupt Taylor Swift. However, when he saw Swift's reaction, he realized the seriousness of the situation.

"The second she turned back around and I saw her face for the first time," Lautner recalled, "I was like, 'Oh! That wasn't good.'"

Swift is currently nominated for eight VMAs at this year's ceremony, which will take place on September 12. If she wins at least seven of those awards, she will surpass Madonna as the most-awarded artist in VMAs history.
