Carlos Alcaraz reaches US Open quarterfinals while Jessica Pegula and Ons Jabeur eliminated

Carlos Alcaraz storms into the quarter-finals of the US Open as upsets continue in the women's draw.

Carlos Alcaraz made an impressive advance into the quarter-finals of the US Open on Monday, while the women's draw saw more upsets as Ons Jabeur and Jessica Pegula were eliminated. Alcaraz, the defending champion, displayed his dominance by defeating Matteo Arnaldi 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 in just under two hours. The 20-year-old Spaniard is aiming to become the first man since Roger Federer in 2008 to successfully defend the US Open title. His quarter-final opponent will be determined later, with a potential match against Germany's Alexander Zverev or Italy's Jannik Sinner. If Alcaraz faces Sinner, it will be a rematch of last year's quarter-final, which set a record for the latest finish in US Open history.

Alcaraz expressed his satisfaction with his performance, stating that he played a solid match with fewer mistakes. In other men's matches, Andrey Rublev advanced to the quarter-finals with a win over Jack Draper, setting up an all-Russian quarter-final against Daniil Medvedev. Rublev and Medvedev have known each other since childhood, and Rublev is even the godfather of Medvedev's daughter.

In the women's draw, more seeded players fell after Iga Swiatek's exit in the fourth round. Jessica Pegula, the third seed, was defeated in straight sets by her compatriot Madison Keys, while fifth seed Ons Jabeur was eliminated by China's Zheng Qinwen. Pegula's campaign ended quickly as Keys dominated the match, winning 6-1, 6-3 in just over an hour. Keys will now face Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova in the quarter-finals. Jabeur, who has been battling the flu, was unable to overcome Zheng's power and precision. Zheng will face second seed Aryna Sabalenka in the quarter-finals.

Sabalenka's victory over Daria Kasatkina secured her place in the last eight and also ensured that she will become the new world number one when the rankings are released. Sabalenka expressed her excitement and disbelief at achieving the top ranking, stating that it was a goal she had been working towards all year. The US Open continues to provide thrilling matches and unexpected outcomes as the tournament progresses.
