UK stage and screen star Haydn Gwynne dies at 66 after cancer diagnosis.

Versatile and acclaimed British performer Haydn Gwynne dies at 66 after being diagnosed with cancer. She leaves behind a legacy in stage and screen.

Haydn Gwynne, a highly versatile and acclaimed performer in the British entertainment industry, has sadly passed away at the age of 66. She had recently been diagnosed with cancer and peacefully passed away in a London hospital early Friday, surrounded by her beloved sons, close family, and friends.

Born in 1957, Gwynne's journey to becoming an actor began after teaching English in Italy. She rose to prominence with her breakthrough role as a frazzled television news producer in the 1990s sitcom "Drop the Dead Donkey," which offered a sharp yet affectionate portrayal of the world of journalism.

Gwynne's talent extended beyond television, as she also shone in the medical drama "Peak Practice" and delivered standout performances in royal roles. She portrayed Queen Camilla in the satirical series "The Windsors" and captured attention as lady-in-waiting Susan Hussey in "The Crown."

Throughout her career, Gwynne graced the stage with her presence, taking on various roles, including an unforgettable portrayal of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher alongside Helen Mirren as Queen Elizabeth II in "The Audience." Mirren, paying tribute to Gwynne, described her as "a delight as a person and a consummate dedicated actress." Mirren praised Gwynne's ability to seamlessly blend humor and seriousness, a skill that defined her entire career. Gwynne's absence will be deeply felt by all who knew her.

Gwynne's talent was recognized with nominations for both an Olivier Award and a Tony for her performance as a supportive dance teacher in the musical "Billy Elliot" in both London and New York. She also received three other Olivier nominations for her roles in "The Threepenny Opera," "Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown," and "City of Angels."

Despite her illness, Gwynne remained dedicated to her craft and continued to perform in several plays this year. She was set to appear in the musical tribute "Stephen Sondheim's Old Friends" in London's West End but had to withdraw from the production during rehearsals last month due to unforeseen personal circumstances.

Cameron Mackintosh, the producer of "Stephen Sondheim's Old Friends," expressed his admiration for Gwynne, describing her as "a truly wonderful person, as well as a phenomenally talented actress and singer." In honor of her memory, Friday's performance will be dedicated to her.

The passing of Haydn Gwynne is a great loss to the entertainment industry, leaving behind a legacy of exceptional performances and a profound impact on those who had the pleasure of working with her. Her talent, dedication, and warm personality will be deeply missed.
