The incident occurred around 8:30 p.m. in the town of Beavercreek, which is part of the Dayton metropolitan area. The shooter's motive and identity were not immediately released.

The victims were taken to local hospitals, but their conditions were unknown at the time of the news conference held by Beavercreek Police Capt. Scott Molnar. The suspect died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and responding officers did not fire any shots. The store was cleared and secured, and there was no longer an active threat.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms, the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation, the FBI, and other local agencies are assisting with the investigation. Walmart issued a statement expressing heartbreak over the incident and stated that they were working closely with investigators.
