Signing day roundup: Jeremiah Smith commits to Ohio State

Five-star wide receiver Jeremiah Smith signed with Ohio State, causing nervousness in Columbus as Florida schools made last-minute push.

Five-star wide receiver Jeremiah Smith, who is ranked as the No. 1 player in the 2024 class, made it official by signing his letter of intent to Ohio State on the first day of the national signing period. The decision caused some anxiety in Columbus as the major Florida schools made a last-minute effort to change Smith's mind. Despite committing to the Buckeyes on Dec. 22, 2022, the head coaches of Florida, Florida State, and Miami made home visits in an attempt to alter his decision. Smith, who hails from Chaminade-Madonna Prep in Hollywood, Fla., signed his letter of intent in a ceremony on Wednesday afternoon, proudly donning an Ohio State cap. The 247Sports composite ranked him as the top player in the class, with only two players since the start of the rankings era receiving higher scores. Meanwhile, the loss of wide receiver Jeremiah McClellan, who flipped his commitment from Ohio State to Oregon, was softened by Smith's signing. McClellan, listed as the No. 13 wide receiver and the No. 49 player overall in the 2024 class by the 247Sports composite, had not signed his national letter of intent as of early Wednesday afternoon. Another notable development was Georgia adding to its top-ranked recruiting haul by flipping five-star safety K.J. Bolden, who had previously committed to Florida State. The Buford (Ga.) High School star, ranked No. 1 at his position and No. 14 overall by the 247Sports composite, is the third five-star commitment for the Bulldogs, joining cornerback Ellis Robinson IV and linebacker Justin Williams. Bolden, who committed to the Seminoles in August and visited the Tallahassee campus last weekend, ultimately chose to join Georgia. This was a significant win for the Bulldogs, further solidifying their position as a powerhouse in college football recruiting.
