Netflix Break Point producer Netflix curse Nick Kyrgios Naomi Osaka ATP Tour Tennis

Netflix Break Point producer discusses Netflix curse, Kyrgios, Osaka involvement. Season 2 aims to show lighter, more playful side of tennis.

Netflix released the second season of its popular tennis docuseries, Break Point, on 10 January. ATPTour.com sat down with Executive Producer James Gay-Rees to delve into the series. In the first part of the conversation, Rees discussed the so-called Netflix curse, the involvement of tennis stars Nick Kyrgios and Naomi Osaka, and more.

Reflecting on the first season, Rees expressed pride in the show's focus on the challenging and often lonely nature of the professional tennis tour. For the second season, the goal was to bring a more playful and lighter tone, while still showcasing the ups and downs of life on the tour. The production process also involved a more focused approach, following fewer players in a more detailed manner.

The concept of the "Netflix curse" gained attention during the Australian Open, as featured players faced difficulties in the tournament. Rather than viewing it as a negative, Rees saw it as an opportunity to add a unique angle to the series, likening it to a "teen slasher" narrative for the first episode.

Despite the perceived curse, global tennis stars Nick Kyrgios and Naomi Osaka remained involved in the series. Their insights and perspectives added depth to the show, providing a firsthand look at the challenges and experiences of professional players. Rees highlighted Kyrgios's ability to articulate the player mindset and shared his interest in learning more about rising star Holger Rune, whose journey paralleled that of fellow young talent Carlos Alcaraz.

The executive producer expressed excitement for the future of tennis, as diverse and compelling characters like Alcaraz and Rune continue to make their mark on the sport. Their unique journeys and personalities promise to captivate audiences and contribute to the rich tapestry of tennis storytelling. Rees looks forward to witnessing their continued success and the impact they will have on the rankings and the sport as a whole.
