NBA insider hints rival team eyeing Dallas Mavericks coach Jason Kidd for top position

NBA rumors swirl as Lakers eye Jason Kidd as potential head coach, could leave Mavericks after playoff run against Thunder.

The Dallas Mavericks are currently focused on their upcoming second-round series against the Oklahoma City Thunder, but rumors are swirling that their head coach, Jason Kidd, is being targeted by one of their top rivals.

As the Mavericks gear up for their next NBA games, they are enjoying a well-deserved break after a tough first-round victory over the Los Angeles Clippers. While much of the credit will go to star player Luka Doncic, Kidd's coaching prowess has played a significant role in the team's success.

In his third season as head coach, Kidd has led the Mavericks to two 50-win seasons and has helped Doncic and Kyrie Irving thrive as a dynamic duo on the court. He has also managed to transform the team into a formidable defensive force in the latter part of the season.

Kidd's coaching acumen has not gone unnoticed, as reports suggest that the Los Angeles Lakers are eyeing him as a potential candidate to fill their vacant head coaching position. With the recent departure of Darvin Ham following the Lakers' elimination from the 2024 NBA Playoffs, Kidd has emerged as a top contender for the role.

According to ESPN's Dave McMenamin, Kidd, along with Tyronn Lue and JJ Redick, is among the top choices for the Lakers' coaching search. While Lue and Kidd are currently under contract with their respective teams for another season, there is speculation that Kidd could become available if the Mavericks falter against the Thunder in the semifinals.

Although Kidd's future in Dallas seems secure for now, a disappointing exit from the playoffs could potentially open the door for a move to the Lakers. With the Lakers looking to bolster their roster with a third star this summer, they may be willing to part with draft picks in exchange for Kidd's services, given his previous stint as an assistant coach with the team from 2019 to 2021.
