David Corenswet brings a fresh take to the iconic role of Superman

Superhero movies face fatigue, but DC plans a new cinematic universe with films like Superman: Legacy and The Batman - Part II.

Superhero movies have experienced a significant shift in recent years, transitioning from being a major economic force in cinema to facing a period of fatigue. Both Marvel's MCU and DC have felt the impact of this saturation, with Marvel facing criticism for the abundance of films and series, and DC struggling with constant reboots and casting changes.

Despite these challenges, DC is gearing up for a fresh start with the launch of Chapter 1 of their latest cinematic universe. Two films have been announced for this new phase, The Batman - Part II and Superman: Legacy. Directed by former Marvel member James Gunn, Superman: Legacy is set to hit theaters on July 11, 2025, with a first image released featuring actor David Corenswet in the iconic suit.

The image, infused with Gunn's signature comedic touch, shows Clark Kent getting ready in his home as Metropolis faces an attack outside. The suit maintains the classic look of previous films, with the iconic red trunks making a comeback. Legacy is part of Chapter 1 - Gods and Monsters, with ten titles in total planned for this new universe, although details remain scarce.

In addition to The Batman sequel, other films in the works for DC's Chapter 1 include projects centered around The Authority, The Brave and The Bold, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, Booster Gold, Amanda Waller, Supergirl, and Swamp Thing. The animation sector will also see a boost with Creature Commandos, a World War II-era story featuring Frankenstein, a werewolf, a vampire, and a gorgon battling Nazis.

With a focus on exploring different facets of the DC universe, including dark antiheroes, family dynamics, and horror elements, DC is aiming to revitalize its superhero offerings and captivate audiences once again. Despite the challenges faced by the genre, DC's ambitious plans for Chapter 1 indicate a fresh and exciting direction for superhero cinema in the years to come.
