Spring training roundup Cubs pound White Sox
Chicago Cubs defeat Chicago White Sox 8-1 in spring training opener. Christopher Morel and Joe Hudson shine with RBIs.
The Chicago Cubs opened their spring training with an impressive 8-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox. Christopher Morel started the game with a two-run homer in the first inning, followed by Joe Hudson's five RBIs. Morel's home run drove in Ian Happ, and Hudson hit a bases-clearing double, with Matthew Shaw bringing him in with a double to conclude the outburst. Hudson added a two-run infield single in the fifth inning.
Cubs starter Jordan Wicks worked 1 2/3 innings, yielding just one run to the White Sox. Jesse Chavez gave up all six of the Cubs' runs in the first inning. The White Sox had seven other pitchers take the mound, who combined to yield just three more hits.
In another spring training game, the Texas Rangers defeated the Kansas City Royals 5-4. Dustin Harris singled in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the seventh inning, and the Royals had tied the score 4-4 in the top of the inning thanks to Joe Gray's single and Luca Tresh's sacrifice fly. Drew Waters homered for Kansas City to open the scoring in the second.
The Colorado Rockies blanked the Arizona Diamondbacks 3-0, with Carson Palmquist and six relievers combining to strike out 16 batters while yielding just five hits. Elehuris Montero broke the seal with a fourth-inning home run and Drew Romo and Jordan Beck added RBIs for the Rockies.
Freddie Freeman hit his first pitch of spring training out of the park and added a sac fly as the Los Angeles Dodgers handled the San Diego Padres 4-1. Dodgers starter Landon Knack struck out four in two perfect innings before his bullpen took over.
