Ever thought about who's shaped the world of left-handed golfing?. Say hello to Sir Robert James Charles, or shall we say 'Bob Charles', for this Kiwi legend needs no introduction in the realm of pro-golf. Aced it!
Born on March 14th, 1936 in Carterton New Zealand, Bob churned out a phenomenal career, marred by numerous accolades and milestones. His skilful play and commendable consistency earned him wide recognition across tournaments including the British Open Championship - Making him one of only six lefties to have won a major! Impressive right?
"How does Bob's contribution stand out?" you ask...
Before our friend Bob clinched every golfer's dream by winning his first British open at Lytham St Annes in 1963,(source), left-handed golfers were still considered outliers and not essentially representative of international success; Yes, hard to believe given today’s lens! But ever wondered how incredible it would be if such an underdog rises against all odds? That was indeed what happened with our very own champ.
His professional journey spanning over four decades received prestigious acknowledgment when he got introduced into the ‘World Golf Hall Of Fame’ back in 2008. (source). Also worth noting are those epic victories both on PGA tours and Senior PGA Tours that literally catapulted NZ onto Global Golf landscape/circuit - quite clever isn't it?
His last brush with competitive golf saw him being knighted by Queen Elizabeth II back home making him 'Sir' Robert James Charles proving once again that heroes may retire from their playground but they never falter or fade away.. Remember folks – Success leaves clues everywhere, especially on a green turf!.
