History of tennis News & Breaking Stories

What news can we find under History of tennis News Section?

If you're a tennis lover and have ever wondered, "Where did this fantastic sport actually originate from?" Then buckle up because we're about to take an exciting journey through the History of Tennis. It will be like striking a two-handed backhand straight into the vortex of time.

Tennis, as we know it today, concocted in France during the 12th-century but did they use pricey graphite rackets? Not really! Trap yourself - they used their bare palms. Can you imagine that? It's like trying to hit those fast serves with your hands instead of your trusted racket!

This game rapidly transformed and by the 16th-century had become a craze among French nobles. King Louis X even became quite fascinated with jeu de paume ("game of the palm") – how cool is that?

Fast forward to 1874, Lieutenant Walter Clopton Wingfield patented what might sound like a sci-fi movie name: 'Sphairistikè' or (thankfully!) also known as lawn tennis. His version roots closely resemble our modern-day court boundaries—with serving boxes and unfortunately not flying cars.

The first round-robin tournaments were held in Birmingham during 1888. Isn't amazing how far ahead Britain was right then? Just eight years later, in 1896, Tennis was included in Athens Olympic Games – oh boy can you feel goosebumps?

A quick dive across one more century brings us face-to-face with greats such as Chris Evert Lloyd—look her up if she sounds unfamiliar—and Martina Navratilova who took women’s tennis to new levels. And now superstars such as Serena Williams continue mesmerising us via breathtaking matches!

In conclusion; next time when you catch Wimbledon on TV or play an ostensibly simple match on a weekend morning—remember caught against sweat—the echoes of history are following every ball strike.
