Space Debris: A Hidden Hazard in the Cosmos
Have you ever looked up at the night sky and pondered on what else is out there, apart from our planet? It's a vast canvas painted with stars, planets and galaxies. However, what we don't see are the millions of pieces of 'space debris' which also orbit our Earth.
Space debris, sometimes referred to as "junk", might not sound significant but trust me, it is! They're remnants from defunct satellites, used rocket parts and even tiny flecks of paint flying around in space. "So what?" you may ask. Here's an alarming fact - they can whizz along at speeds over 18,000 miles per hour!
Remember that tangy phrase "The devil lies in the details?" Well here are some technical details for all you curious minds out there. NASA classifies any man-made object left purposeless and non-operational anywhere in space as being a "piece of debris". Can you imagine how this manifests? For instance if an astronaut accidentally lets go of a spanner during a space walk – bam!, we've just contributed more to space junk!
You betcha! The numbers keep growing! More than half a million such pieces ranging right down from minuscule specks up-to football-size objects hover menacingly above us complicating future spacecraft launches.
Crumbling satellites or spent rockets hurtling towards earth at high speed could cause irreparable damage upon impact isn't something straight outta science fiction anymore; rather it's raw data representing reality shown by scientists worldwide.
