Chicago Blackhawks expected to select 17-year-old Connor Bedard as No. 1 pick in NHL draft.
The Chicago Blackhawks are set to begin their rebuild with the anticipated No. 1 selection of Canadian center Connor Bedard in the NHL draft. General manager Kyle Davidson, reflecting on the tear-down job he began conducting a summer ago, is eager to start building the team back up again. Bedard, who has been referred to as a generational talent, has drawn comparisons to Connor McDavid following his impressive performances in the Western Hockey League. While Davidson won't confirm the selection, he praises Bedard's skills and maturity. The Anaheim Ducks hold the second pick, followed by the Columbus Blue Jackets, San Jose Sharks, and Montreal Canadiens. Matvei Michkov, a skilled forward from Russia, is the wild card of the draft, as he has been difficult for NHL teams to scout due to travel restrictions. The draft class is regarded as having superior forward depth, with the potential for the first defenseman to be selected outside of the top five picks since 2003. Trades are also a possibility, with many teams seeking to move up in the draft order. However, completing such trades can be challenging. Davidson laughs off any interest in the No. 1 pick, as the Blackhawks look to add a new cornerstone to their team.
