David Corenswet Dreamed of Playing Superman, Idolized Henry Cavill - IGN
David Corenswet, the newly-cast Superman, wants to play a more optimistic version of the character, different from Henry Cavill's portrayal.
Newly-minted Superman star David Corenswet has expressed his desire to portray a more "optimistic" version of the iconic superhero. In a recently resurfaced interview with Entertainment Weekly from 2019, Corenswet revealed his long-standing aspiration to play Superman and his intention to approach the character differently than Henry Cavill.
"I would love to see somebody do an upbeat, throwback," Corenswet expressed. "I love the Henry Cavill dark and gritty take, but I would love to see the next one be very bright and optimistic."
Corenswet has now officially been cast as Superman, alongside Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. After undergoing extensive screen tests, the pair emerged as strong contenders for their respective roles.
However, since the announcement of Corenswet's casting, fans of Superman have been quick to point out the striking resemblance between him and Henry Cavill. Interestingly, these comparisons had already been noted prior to Corenswet's rise to fame.
"It came to my attention before the internet got a hold of me," Corenswet revealed in the aforementioned 2019 interview. "But my pie-in-the-sky ambition is definitely to play Superman."
Now, Corenswet's dream has become a reality.
The actor disclosed that playing Superman has always been his greatest ambition, and it appears that his portrayal of a more optimistic Man of Steel aligns with the plans of DC boss James Gunn for the character.
"The next Superman has to be someone who has all the humanity that Superman has but he's also an alien," Corenswet shared with Variety. "It's gotta be somebody who has the kindness and the compassion that Superman has and be somebody who you want to give a hug."
