Explanation of the ending of Run Rabbit Run: Is Mia still alive or deceased?

Psychological horror film "Run Rabbit Run" debuts on Netflix June 28, 2023.

Run Rabbit Run, the highly anticipated psychological thriller/horror film, has finally made its debut on Netflix after its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. Directed by the talented Daina Reid and written by the brilliant Hannah Kent, this gripping flick delves into the unsettling events that unfold when a mother discovers her child behaving strangely, claiming to be someone from her past.

Starring the talented Sarah Snook as Sarah and the young Lily LaTorre as her daughter Mia, Run Rabbit Run takes viewers on a chilling journey as Mia undergoes a drastic behavioral change after her seventh birthday. She begins to identify as Alice, Sarah's long-lost sister who was presumed dead. As the lines blur between Mia and Alice, the film takes a horrifying turn with some spine-tingling occurrences.

The film concludes with Mia being taken away by what appears to be the spirit of Alice, while Sarah desperately pleads for her release. The fate of Mia is left somewhat ambiguous, but there are hints throughout the film that provide a glimpse into her ultimate destiny.

As the story progresses, Sarah opens up about her past and her relationship with Alice. She reveals that Alice was her sister who vanished when they were both just seven years old. Sarah insists that she had a close bond with her sister, recounting fond memories of playing together.

However, Mia, now fully embracing her new identity as Alice, lashes out at Sarah, claiming that she never played with her and never searched for her during their games of Hide and Seek. Mia accuses Sarah of locking her away. In a subsequent scene, Sarah is seen unlocking a cupboard to release a distraught and disheveled Alice, who attacks Sarah and tries to strangle her.

In a moment of self-defense, Sarah strikes Alice's head with a rabbit trap, but to her horror, she realizes that she has actually harmed Mia. Mia, now terrified, seeks refuge in Alice's room. In a dream sequence that follows, Sarah is depicted pushing Alice off a cliff. Sarah eventually confesses that she was responsible for Alice's disappearance, accepting her own monstrous nature, and falls asleep beside Mia.

Shortly after, Mia is dragged off the bed, and Sarah awakens to witness Alice and Mia holding hands as they walk towards the edge of a cliff. The film concludes with Alice glancing back at a distraught and screaming Sarah, suggesting that she is seeking vengeance for being pushed off the cliff by making Sarah's daughter meet the same fate.

The official synopsis of Run Rabbit Run, as provided by Netflix, states:

"A fertility doctor is frightened by her young daughter's inexplicable memories of a past identity."

In addition to the outstanding performances by Sarah Snook and Lily LaTorre, the film also features Damon Herriman, Greta Scacchi, Neil Melville, and D'Arcy Carty in pivotal roles. The production is brought to life by the talented team of Anna McLeish, Naomi Mulholland, and Sarah Shaw.

Run Rabbit Run is a joint production by XYZ Films, VicScreen, and Carver Films, and is exclusively available for streaming on Netflix.
