Royal Caribbean International's Icon of the Seas, the world's largest cruise ship, is nearing completion in Finland and is set to make its debut in Caribbean waters next year. The mammoth ship, weighing in at a projected 250,800 tonnes, will surpass its sister ship, Wonder of the Seas, by 3m and 14,000 tonnes. With a capacity of 5,610 passengers, the Icon of the Seas promises to offer an abundance of entertainment and amenities.
The ship's most impressive feature is its Category 6 waterpark, the largest at sea, which boasts six record-breaking water slides, seven pools, and nine whirlpools. In addition to the waterpark, the ship is divided into eight distinct "neighbourhoods," each catering to different guest types. Families with children can enjoy the Surfside neighbourhood, complete with an aquapark, a pool for adults, snack bars, and loungers.
For those seeking evening entertainment, the Icon of the Seas offers 15 lively venues and live music spots, including a Dueling Piano bar, a sports and game bar, a retro arcade, and stand-up shows. Guests can also enjoy unique experiences such as dining beneath a waterfall in the Aqua-Dome or watching ice-skating performances in the middle of the Caribbean at Absolute Zero.
Food enthusiasts will have plenty of options to choose from, with a wide range of cuisines available, including pizza, sushi, fine dining, casual bites, steak and seafood, and burgers. The ship offers 28 different types of accommodations, including family-friendly setups, ocean-view rooms, and spacious options for group travelers. Some rooms even feature their own slides for the kids, while couples can indulge in a sunset corner suite.
The Icon of the Seas, built at the Meyer Turku shipyard, recently completed its first sea trials, which involved testing the main engines, hull, brake systems, steering, noise levels, and vibrations. Despite a slight delay in departure due to wind conditions, the ship passed all tests according to schedule. Royal Caribbean International president and CEO Michael Bayley described the ship as the "ultimate family vacation" and praised the energy and effort put into its creation.
