Rickie Fowler triumphs in playoff at Rocket Mortgage Classic, ending a four-year PGA dry spell
Rickie Fowler wins Rocket Mortgage Classic, ending a four-year championship drought.
Rickie Fowler, with a sense of relief and accomplishment, celebrated his victory at the Rocket Mortgage Classic. After numerous missed opportunities in the past, Fowler held his nerve and sank a crucial 12-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole to outlast Collin Morikawa and Adam Hadwin. This win comes just two weeks after Fowler's disappointing performance at the U.S. Open.
Fowler expressed his happiness at finally breaking his four-year winless streak, stating, "It's just nice to have this one out of the way. I'm obviously going to soak this one in and celebrate a bit. Yeah, it's just been a long road." The golfer had come close to victory in June, finishing fifth at the U.S. Open and tying for 13th at the Travelers Championship.
Throughout the tournament, Fowler was supported by a sea of orange-clad fans at Detroit Golf Club. However, he faced stiff competition from Morikawa, who nearly equaled the course record with an outstanding round. Not to be deterred, Fowler responded with a remarkable approach shot on the 72nd hole, leaving him with a 3-foot birdie putt to force a three-way tie at 24 under.
In the playoff, Fowler encountered a setback with an errant tee shot, but he recovered with an impressive approach shot that landed 12 feet from the hole. Morikawa's approach shot fell short, bouncing into the rough. Hadwin missed a long putt, and Morikawa's chip also fell short, giving Fowler the opportunity to seal the victory before thunderstorms arrived.
Reflecting on his win, Fowler acknowledged the challenges he had faced in recent tournaments and expressed his confidence in his abilities, saying, "I knew it was just a matter of time with how I've been playing. I've had a couple tough weekends where I had a chance." Morikawa, despite his disappointment at falling short, commended Fowler's exceptional performance, stating, "He's been playing phenomenal golf, it's great to see. People love him."
Morikawa's impressive 8-under round put him just one shot behind the course record of 63. Hadwin also played well with a score of 67, while Fowler carded a 68. Notably, Fowler had previously held the 54-hole lead at the Los Angeles Country Club and had been a co-leader after three rounds in previous tournaments, but this victory marked his breakthrough.
At 34 years old, Fowler demonstrated both physical and mental resilience to secure his sixth PGA Tour victory and his first since the 2019 Waste Management Phoenix Open. As a beloved figure in the golfing world and a longtime ambassador for Rocket Mortgage, Fowler received overwhelming support from the crowd, with chants of "Rick-ie! Rick-ie!" echoing around the 18th green.
While Fowler faced a challenging stretch of 10 consecutive pars on a relatively easy course, Morikawa showcased his skill with eight birdies throughout the round. A crucial putt on the 12th hole brought Morikawa within striking distance of Fowler, and a birdie on the 14th hole tied the two golfers at 23 under.
In addition to the top three finishers, Monday qualifier Peter Kuest, Lucas Glover, and Taylor Moore tied for fourth place at 21 under. Kuest, ranked 789th in the world, performed exceptionally well and earned a spot in the upcoming John Deere Classic in Illinois.
Due to inclement weather, play was suspended on Saturday for 1 hour and 42 minutes, resulting in a revised schedule for the final round. The leaders teed off on Sunday morning, five hours earlier than originally planned, with threesomes starting on both the front and back nine.
