Unexpectedly Desiring My Adventures with Superman as the Surprising Superman Genesis

New anime-style Superman cartoon, My Adventures with Superman, impresses with its fresh take on the origin story, DC Universe references, and engaging cast.

When it comes to Superman's origin story, it's safe to say that we've all seen it countless times. So, when I was asked if I wanted to watch yet another retelling of this familiar tale, I couldn't help but feel a sense of exhaustion. However, I decided to give My Adventures with Superman a chance, the new anime-style Superman cartoon from Adult Swim and Max. And let me tell you, I was pleasantly surprised by how it managed to breathe new life into Clark Kent's journey of becoming Superman.

Right from the opening scene of the first episode, titled 'Adventures of a Normal Man, Part One,' My Adventures with Superman takes a fresh and emotional approach to Clark Kent's discovery of his powers and his past. It introduces enough twists to the classic origin story to keep viewers engaged, even if they are already familiar with the tale.

What sets this show apart is its deep connection to the DC Universe. From the inclusion of Livewire, a villain who originally appeared in the '90s Superman: The Animated Series before making her way into the comics, to the larger narrative involving Kryptonian technology and recognizable DC characters, the series immerses itself in the rich lore of the superhero world.

In its first two episodes, My Adventures with Superman introduces viewers to a whole new vision of the DC Universe. It explores different relationships and previously untold storylines while still maintaining a semblance of familiarity with Clark Kent's journey to becoming Superman. As the episodes progress, the show takes more liberties with the traditional narrative, allowing for a refreshing and unexpected take on this beloved superhero's origin.

However, what truly makes My Adventures with Superman shine is its incredible cast and its sense of humor. The core trio of Clark Kent, Lois Lane, and Jimmy Olsen brings a perfect balance of morality, chaos, and conspiracy to the series. Their chemistry sets a strong foundation for revisiting Superman's early days in a way that feels both nostalgic and new.

If I were to draw a comparison between this show and a comic, it would undoubtedly be Mark Waid and Leinil Francis Yu's Superman: Birthright. Both explore Clark Kent's journey of self-discovery and what it means to embrace his identity as Superman. However, My Adventures with Superman adds its own twist by infusing it with a shonen and sentai-inspired aesthetic, reminiscent of the popular anime series My Hero Academia. It's as if Warner Bros. has taken inspiration from the success of My Hero Academia and applied it to the world of Superman.

If you've been yearning for a version of Superman that brings a smile to your face from the very beginning and delivers some of the most captivating and finely animated Superman action in recent memory, then My Adventures with Superman is the show you've been waiting for. Additionally, if this series is any indication of the new direction that DC Films will take with their live-action Superman, then we are in for a real treat.
