Djokovic Triumphs Over Rublev, Advances to Wimbledon Semi-Final
Djokovic wins bruising battle, advances to Wimbledon semi-finals against Sinner.
Novak Djokovic has emerged victorious from a grueling match against Andrey Rublev, the seventh seed, as he continues his quest for an eighth Wimbledon men's title, which would equal the record set by Margaret Court of 24 major singles titles. The Serbian player fought back after losing the first set to secure a 4-6 6-1 6-4 6-3 victory in the quarter-finals. Djokovic, the second seed, will now face Italy's Jannik Sinner in the semi-finals.
Sinner, aged 21, achieved his first Grand Slam semi-final by defeating Russian player Roman Safiullin with a score of 6-4 3-6 6-2 6-2. In contrast, Djokovic will be competing in his 46th major men's semi-final, equaling the all-time record set by Roger Federer. This highly anticipated match between Djokovic and Sinner will take place on Friday.
Djokovic, a four-time defending champion, fought hard to secure his win against Rublev, extending his winning streak at the All England Club to 33 consecutive victories. His last completed match loss at SW19 was in 2016, and he has not been defeated on Centre Court since the 2013 final against Andy Murray.
Sinner, on the other hand, had previously lost in all four of his major quarter-finals. However, he displayed dominance after a slight setback in the second set, ultimately achieving a breakthrough victory. Sinner's achievement of reaching the Wimbledon semi-finals at the age of 21 makes him the youngest man to do so since 2007. However, this record may be surpassed by either Carlos Alcaraz or Holger Rune, who will compete in their quarter-final match on Wednesday.
Expressing his joy and satisfaction, Sinner stated, "It means a lot to me. We have put in a lot of work and made many sacrifices. This is a very special moment for me."
In his match against Safiullin, Sinner secured the first set with a single break of serve and initially held a 3-1 lead in the second set. However, he faced a setback as Safiullin won five consecutive games to level the set. Nevertheless, Sinner regained his composure and dominated the final two sets, preventing Safiullin from turning the match into a competitive battle.
Reflecting on his reaction to the challenging moments in the match, Sinner expressed his happiness, stating, "I was break up in the second and got down a little bit. I am very happy with how I reacted."
