Coroner: Lisa Marie Presley's death attributed to small bowel obstruction due to bariatric surgery
Lisa Marie Presley died from complications of bariatric surgery.
Lisa Marie Presley, the singer, songwriter, and heir of Elvis Presley, tragically passed away at the age of 54. Authorities have determined that her death was a result of complications from bariatric surgery that she had undergone several years ago. The cause of death was specifically attributed to a small bowel obstruction.
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner's office released an autopsy report on Thursday, providing additional details about the circumstances surrounding Presley's death. The report revealed that the complication she experienced is a common occurrence following bariatric surgery, a weight loss procedure often pursued when other methods have proven ineffective or when there are underlying medical conditions.
Presley passed away at a hospital in Los Angeles, where she had been rushed by paramedics after a 911 call reporting a woman in cardiac arrest at her home. At the time, there was no indication of what may have caused the medical emergency. However, the autopsy report mentioned that she had been experiencing stomach pain earlier in the day.
A funeral was held for Presley on January 22 at Graceland, the iconic home where she spent her childhood with her father. Graceland has since become a museum, attracting tourists and serving as a shrine for Elvis fans.
Presley leaves behind three daughters: Riley Keough, a 34-year-old actor known for her role in "Daisy Jones & the Six," and 15-year-old twins Harper and Finley Lockwood. Tragically, Presley's son, Benjamin Keough, had passed away in 2020.
Following Presley's death, it initially seemed that a legal battle would ensue over her estate. However, just four days after her funeral, her mother, Priscilla Presley, filed court documents challenging a 2016 amendment to Lisa Marie Presley's living trust. The amendment had removed Priscilla Presley and a former business manager as trustees and replaced them with Lisa Marie's two eldest children. Eventually, Priscilla Presley and Riley Keough reached a settlement in May.
In a positive turn of events, Riley Keough received her first Emmy nomination on Wednesday for her outstanding performance in the limited series or TV movie "Daisy Jones & the Six."
