"Meet Sal Frelick: The Rookie OF Who Stole the Show in His MLB Debut"
Brewers call up prospect Sal Frelick, who impresses in MLB debut.
The Milwaukee Brewers, currently engaged in a fierce battle for the top spot in the NL Central with rookie sensation Elly De La Cruz and the Cincinnati Reds, made a strategic decision to call up one of their top prospects on Saturday in order to inject some energy into their lineup.
And boy, did Sal Frelick deliver.
Making his debut at American Family Field, Frelick left a lasting impression on the Brew Crew faithful in Wisconsin.
Allow The Sporting News to introduce you to Sal Frelick, the Brewers' newest addition to their right field.
Frelick was selected by the Brewers in the first round of the 2021 MLB Draft, being chosen as the 15th overall pick. As a result, he received a generous $4 million signing bonus from Milwaukee, slightly exceeding the slot value of $3,885,800. Prior to joining the Brewers, Frelick played college baseball at Boston College. His rapid ascent through the Brewers' organizational rankings was temporarily slowed down by a thumb injury, but he quickly caught up and was only behind fellow outfield prospect Jackson Chourio when he received the call-up from Triple-A Nashville.
During the previous spring, Frelick represented Italy in the World Baseball Classic before resuming his journey through the Brewers' system.
However, baseball wasn't the only sport that occupied Frelick's life.
Hailing from Lexington, Massachusetts, Frelick was also a standout high school football player. In fact, he served as the starting quarterback for Lexington High School and was honored as the state's Gatorade Player of the Year during his senior year after throwing 30 touchdowns. Boston College offered Frelick both football and baseball scholarships, but he ultimately chose the latter.
It's worth noting that Frelick's father, Jeff Frelick, was a former football player for the University of Pittsburgh. Needless to say, there was a proud father in the stands cheering him on.
While Frelick's mother, Patty, couldn't be present at Saturday's game, she will be in Milwaukee to support her son on Sunday. In the meantime, she stayed back home to keep the family dog company.
At this point in the 2023 season, it's no secret that the Brewers are in dire need of assistance in right field.
"We're not getting the production we need out of right field," expressed Milwaukee manager Craig Counsell prior to Saturday's game against the Atlanta Braves. "We're hoping to see improved performance in that position, and Sal will have the opportunity to provide that for us."
Frelick, in his pregame interview with reporters, shared his expectations for his contribution to the Brew Crew.
"I'm incredibly excited to show everyone the player they drafted two years ago – a small but fiery spark plug, a nuisance at the plate, the guy with a dirty uniform," he stated.
By the end of the game, Frelick had fulfilled all three of those expectations. He went a perfect 3 for 3 with three singles, driving in two runs, including the game-winning run, and scoring one himself from the sixth spot in the batting order.
Prior to Saturday's action, Brewers right fielders had collectively produced a lackluster .183/.271/.275 slash line, making Frelick's impact all the more immediate and significant.
Not only did the rookie excel at the plate, but he also showcased his defensive prowess with two impressive leaping catches that are sure to be featured on highlight reels.
The celebration for Frelick didn't end there, as the crowd chanted his name and his teammates doused him in a Gatorade bath.
With the Brewers poised for a strong finish to the season, Frelick might just be the spark plug that ignites their momentum.
