Domingo German's Suspension and Latest Report Expose Pitcher's Clubhouse Inebriation
New York Yankees pitcher Domingo German placed on restricted list for alcohol abuse, will miss rest of 2023 MLB season.
The New York Yankees made a significant decision on Wednesday when they placed pitcher Domingo German on the restricted list. German voluntarily agreed to enter inpatient treatment for alcohol abuse, and as a result, he will be absent for the remainder of the 2023 MLB season.
Although the Yankees have been relatively tight-lipped about the specifics of German's issues, reports have surfaced regarding his intoxicated behavior around his teammates. Witnesses claim that German displayed belligerence and lacked emotional control in the team's clubhouse. It's important to note, however, that there have been no reports of altercations with teammates or other individuals in the vicinity.
This is not the first time German has faced disciplinary action. In fact, he served an 81-game suspension in both 2019 and 2020 for violating MLB's joint domestic violence policy. According to The Athletic, German was under the influence of alcohol on the night he physically abused his then-girlfriend, now-wife Mara Vega.
During a press conference, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman addressed the situation, expressing concern for German's well-being. Cashman emphasized the team's commitment to supporting the player, who remains under contract with the Yankees until 2024. He stated, "Hopefully, the steps that are being taken today will benefit him for the remaining part of his life. I'm just worried right now for the person and for the immediate family."
Prior to his absence, Domingo German had been having an impressive season with the Yankees in 2023. He had accumulated 114 strikeouts and 34 walks in 108.2 innings pitched, maintaining a 4.56 ERA.
Despite German's contributions, the Yankees currently find themselves in fifth place in the AL East with a 56-52 record. They trail the division-leading Baltimore Orioles by 10 games. While the team still has a chance to make the playoffs, German's absence will undoubtedly make their journey more challenging. The Yankees will need standout performances from pitchers such as Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodon, and Luis Severino in order to secure a postseason spot.
