Johnny Manziel reveals suicidal thoughts
Johnny Manziel, former NFL player, opens up about his struggles with addiction and mental health, admitting to planning suicide.
In the highly anticipated documentary "Untold: Johnny Football," set to premiere on Netflix on August 8th, Johnny Manziel opens up about his darkest moments, revealing that he had contemplated taking his own life. This revelation sheds light on the tumultuous period that followed the 2015 NFL season, which marked the end of his career in the league.
During the documentary, Manziel bravely discusses his struggles with substance abuse, admitting that he was heavily reliant on OxyContin and cocaine in the aftermath of the 2015 season. This period was marred by personal and legal issues, including a misdemeanor assault charge stemming from an incident with his then-girlfriend, Colleen Crowley, in January 2016. These challenges ultimately led to his release from the Cleveland Browns in March of the same year.
The 30-year-old athlete reveals that he reached a point where he felt hopeless and contemplated suicide. Manziel discloses that he had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder but refused to seek rehabilitation, instead resorting to self-destructive behavior. Reflecting on this dark period, he admits, "I think I was just running from problems. It was probably a $5 million bender. Direct self-sabotage, trying to burn this thing down. I had planned to do everything that I wanted to do at that point in my life. Spend as much money as I possibly could, and then my plan was to take my life."
Disturbingly, Manziel even purchased a gun with the intent of ending his life. He shares, "Months prior, I went and bought a gun I knew I was going to use. I wanted to get as bad as humanly possible to where it made sense and it made it seem like an excuse and an out for me." However, fate intervened as the gun malfunctioned, sparing his life.
This pivotal moment forced Manziel to confront the consequences of his actions and seek personal growth. He acknowledges the damage he had caused in his relationships with Colleen, the NFL, and his alma mater, Texas A&M. Additionally, he reveals that he had distanced himself from his family during this period, feeling isolated and alone.
Manziel's assault charges were eventually dismissed, and he dedicated himself to improving his mental health. In 2018, he signed with the Canadian Football League (CFL), followed by a stint in the Alliance of American Football (AAF) in 2019. More recently, he has been involved in the Fan Controlled Football league, showcasing his determination to rebuild his life and career.
The teaser for the "Untold: Johnny Football" documentary offers a glimpse into the raw and emotional journey that Manziel has undertaken. It promises to provide a comprehensive exploration of his struggles, resilience, and ultimate redemption. As viewers eagerly await its release, they can expect an honest and unfiltered account of one man's battle with personal demons and his inspiring journey towards self-discovery and growth.
