Chicago White Sox vs. Cleveland Guardians: August 6, 2023 Gametracker Results, Stats, and Recap

Elvis Andrus hits a two-run single after consecutive throwing errors by Bryan Rocchio, giving the White Sox a win.

The Chicago White Sox emerged victorious with a 5-3 win over the Cleveland Guardians on Sunday, thanks to a two-run single by Elvis Andrus in the ninth inning. The game followed a heated benches-clearing brawl the previous day, which resulted in six ejections. The altercation between Tim Anderson of the White Sox and José Ramírez of the Guardians is currently under review by Major League Baseball for potential disciplinary action.

In the series finale, the White Sox were down to their final strike before mounting a comeback against Cleveland's All-Star closer, Emmanuel Clase. Chicago loaded the bases and took advantage of consecutive throwing errors by Cleveland rookie Bryan Rocchio. Rocchio's errant throws allowed the White Sox to tie the game and Andrus capitalized with his timely single up the middle, securing the win.

Sammy Peralta earned the win for the White Sox, while Jimmy Lambert recorded his first career save. Rookie Gabriel Arias contributed with a two-run homer for the Guardians.

The brawl on Saturday began with Anderson throwing the first punch, followed by a retaliatory blind right hook from Ramírez. Both players are likely to face suspensions for their actions. In addition to the players, Cleveland manager Terry Francona, third base coach Mike Sarbaugh, Clase, and Chicago manager Pedro Grifol were also ejected from the game.

Despite the tense atmosphere, Ramírez received a warm reception from the crowd during his first at-bat. The aftermath of the brawl saw the White Sox take an early lead, scoring two runs in the first inning. Luis Robert Jr. drove in a run with an RBI triple, and Eloy Jiménez added a sacrifice fly.

Andrus, known for his success against Cleveland throughout his career, continued to torment the Guardians with his hitting prowess. He has a batting average of .376 at Progressive Field and holds the record for a 39-game hitting streak in Cleveland during his time with the Texas Rangers.

The White Sox also saw the debut of pitcher Lane Ramsey, who at 6-foot-9, is one of the tallest players in the league alongside Minnesota's Bailey Ober.

In terms of injuries, the White Sox placed catcher Seby Zavala on the 10-day injured list due to a strained left oblique. Carlos Pérez was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte to take his place on the roster.

Looking ahead, the White Sox will face the New York Yankees in a three-game series at home, with Dylan Cease starting the opener. The Guardians will take on the Toronto Blue Jays in a four-game series, with rookie Gavin Williams starting for Cleveland.
