Justin Thomas misses FedEx Cup cut after chip shot
Justin Thomas misses FedEx Cup playoffs in heartbreaking fashion, falling just one spot short of qualification.
Justin Thomas experienced a devastating blow as he narrowly missed out on qualifying for the FedEx Cup playoffs. Going into the Wyndham Championship, Thomas was ranked 79th in the points standings and needed to break into the top 70 to secure his spot in the playoffs. Despite finishing tied for 12th at 11 under, Thomas only managed to improve to 71st place, falling just eight points short of Ben Griffin at 70th.
Thomas, a former World No. 1 and two-time major champion, had a tense moment during the final round at the 18th hole. With a long shot to the hole for his third shot, Thomas pitched the ball towards the pin. It bounced off the bottom of the pin and narrowly missed going in for a hole-out birdie that could have changed his fate. Thomas was left in disbelief, collapsing to the ground and covering his eyes.
Speaking after the round, Thomas expressed his disappointment, acknowledging that it would have been incredible if the ball had gone in. He was uncertain of his fate at that moment and made the decision not to stick around and watch the conclusion of the tournament. Thomas felt he had done everything he could, playing his best and giving it his all. He hoped that his efforts would be enough to secure his place in the playoffs.
Leading up to this tournament, Thomas had struggled with five missed cuts in his last seven starts. His performance at the majors this season had been particularly poor, with two rounds over 80. This unfortunate turn of events meant that Thomas would miss the playoffs for the first time since his rookie season in 2014, despite winning the FedEx Cup in 2017.
Adam Scott, another well-known name and former World No. 1, also missed out on the playoffs. Scott shot a final-round 63 to tie for seventh at 12 under, but it was not enough to overcome his starting position at No. 81. He only managed to climb to No. 72. Scott and Matt Kuchar were the only two players who had previously made the playoffs every year since their inception, but now Kuchar holds that distinction alone.
Lucas Glover, who entered the week at No. 112 in the points standings, emerged as the tournament winner with a score of 20-under 260. This victory propelled him to 49th place, securing his place in the FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis, Tennessee. Billy Horschel, who had co-led the tournament with Glover, finished in fourth place and was only able to climb to No. 90.
Other notable players who missed the top-70 requirement for the playoffs included Shane Lowry of Ireland (No. 78), Joel Dahmen (No. 84), and Gary Woodland (No. 94). It was a disappointing outcome for these players who had hoped to continue their season in the playoffs.
