Saints sign RB Darrel Williams, former player for Chiefs and Cardinals

The New Orleans Saints have signed veteran running back Darrel Williams after a series of injuries to their depth chart. Williams brings versatility and production as a receiver.

The New Orleans Saints have made a significant move at the running back position. According to Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football, the team has signed veteran running back Darrel Williams. Williams recently worked out for the Saints on Monday.

This signing comes at a crucial time for the Saints, as they have been dealing with a number of injuries in their running back depth chart. Rookie third-round draft pick Kendre Miller is expected to be sidelined for the next week or two due to a knee sprain, as reported by Underhill. Additionally, backup Kirk Merritt is managing a hamstring issue, and Eno Benjamin suffered a season-ending Achilles injury.

Adding to the complexity of the situation is Alvin Kamara's three-game suspension. With Kamara out, the Saints will rely on a combination of Williams, Miller, Merritt (if healthy), and undrafted rookie Ellis Merriweather to compete for one or two roster spots behind Jamaal Williams at the start of the season.

Fortunately, Williams has the qualifications to make a strong case for a roster spot. Standing at 5-foot-11 and weighing 219 pounds, the 28-year-old brings versatility to the table, particularly as a receiver. While he had a limited role with the Arizona Cardinals last season, recording just 25 touches for 111 scrimmage yards and one rushing touchdown, he was much more productive during his time with the Kansas City Chiefs.

In four years with the Chiefs, Williams accumulated 1,014 rushing yards and 771 receiving yards. He found the end zone 15 times as both a runner and receiver. His best season came in 2021, where he rushed for 558 yards and scored six touchdowns, while also adding 452 receiving yards and two touchdown catches. Additionally, Williams has experience playing special teams.

It's worth noting that Williams has local ties to New Orleans. He played college football at LSU and grew up in the Marrero community on the West Bank, attending John Ehret High School.

Overall, the addition of Darrel Williams provides the Saints with a capable and versatile option at the running back position. With injuries and suspensions impacting their depth, Williams has the opportunity to make an impact and secure a spot on the roster. His previous success with the Chiefs and his familiarity with the New Orleans area make him an intriguing addition for the Saints.
