'PGA DFS Showdown Slate Picks for Round 2 at BMW Championship 2023'

Rory McIlroy dominates with a bogey-free round of 65, while Brian Harman and Scottie Scheffler also perform well.

In today's round, Rory McIlroy demonstrated his exceptional golf skills by making five birdies, surpassing the number of fairways he hit, which was only three. Despite this, he managed to complete the round with a score of 65, without any bogeys. Brian Harman also impressed with a score of -5, proving his worth for the Ryder Cup. Scottie Scheffler, in third place, seems to have found a putter that can improve his game, although he still struggles with bad rounds. Rickie Fowler and Wyndham Clark are currently leading the pack, making Olympia Fields resemble LACC in terms of leaderboard positioning. Sahith Theegala, Chris Kirk, and Matt Fitzpatrick are also tied for third place in the second leg of the FedEx Cup Playoffs.

Now, let's delve into the analysis of the previous round's top performers and disappointments to create a player pool filled with potential and strategic advantage. My DFS style focuses heavily on ownership, which may sometimes lead to feeling like an unsuccessful player. However, the satisfaction of a low-owned golfer performing well makes it worthwhile. In this article, we will evaluate the performances from the previous round to identify golfers with high upside and leverage.

Traditionally, the strategy for showdown slates has been to target golfers who performed well in the previous round, especially those who excelled with their irons. This makes sense, as you want to roster players who are currently playing good golf. These players will likely have higher ownership and be more popular picks than those in the same price range who had an off day, particularly with their irons. These are the golfers I am gravitating towards, as they have the potential to bounce back the following day with lower ownership.

Fortunately, it seems that the rain will not be a major factor for the rest of the week, although the course may not dry out completely by the afternoon wave.

With the weather conditions no longer providing an edge in Round 2, the entire slate is open for consideration in terms of player pool selection.

As there are still three rounds remaining in the tournament, taking a chance on players further down the leaderboard seems less risky, as they still have an opportunity to perform well and climb up the ranks. Based on the projected ownership in the model for Round 2, we can identify golfers with lower ownership who are still expected to score highly tomorrow.

Below are the power rankings of the golfers we are keeping an eye on for Round 2. Premium subscribers can access the full-field model HERE, which includes pre-event rankings, round-specific scoring averages, birdie percentages, weighted approach ratings, and ownership projections for tomorrow's showdown slate.

Please note that the ownership numbers mentioned are based on the $5 SINGLE ENTRY contest, and ownership in showdown can vary depending on field size and entry fee. However, it should provide a general idea of the most owned players and their surrounding counterparts.

Our favorite play, and the only one in this category, is Rory McIlroy. Despite his outstanding performance today, it seemed like he was not even at his best. Knowing that he can navigate the course under par even with limited fairway hits should give him more confidence off the tee. When he has a round with more accurate drives, we can expect even more birdies from him. At a price of $12,000, he will be the only golfer in our player pool priced at $10,000 or above, and will be included in at least half of my lineups.

If you are not a fan of Rory, other options to consider are Viktor Hovland and Patrick Cantlay.

Our favorite play for Round 2 is Tyrrell Hatton. He has the potential to shoot a low score if his putter aligns with his reliable strokes gained and approach play from Round 2. Priced at $9,100 with projected ownership of less than 10% after a mediocre level par round in Round 1, Hatton offers great value.

Other options to consider are Tommy Fleetwood, Jordan Spieth, and Max Homa.

Wyndham Clark is our favorite play for this round, as he is well-suited to this golf course due to his long drives and impressive iron play from the rough. He seems to be in good form again, and when he performs well, it tends to be consistent throughout the week. Priced in the $8,000 range, he offers great value and the potential for a US Open victory.

Our favorite play is Byeong Hun An, who shot a level par round today but has the ability to improve on that performance. His long drives and skill around the green are crucial for success on this course. Although he struggled in other areas today, we can expect him to continue performing well off the tee tomorrow, with improvements in other aspects of his game. He has the potential to top the leaderboard in Round 2's showdown slate.

Denny McCarthy seems to have recovered from recent struggles with his ball striking. Although he lost strokes off the tee today, he gained in all other areas. If his short game continues to impress, he can make up significant ground on the field on any given day. Other options to consider are Taylor Moore, Adam Schenk, Brendon Todd, Nick Taylor, Lee Hodges, and Tom Hoge, who will be paired together in some combination in my Rory lineups to pursue less risky upside in the more expensive price ranges.

The lineup optimizer works effectively with the projected ownership from the model. If you are unsure how to use it, there is a video at the top of the "PGA Lineup Optimizer" page that explains how to incorporate my projected ownership or points into your optimizer.
