FC Barcelona vs. Cadiz Result: Pedri Prevents Break of Unwanted 50-Year Record
Barcelona's Pedri and Ferran Torres helped the team avoid a 50-year record by securing their first win of the season against Cadiz. Pedri scored the first goal, while 16-year-old Lamine Yamal made his debut and almost scored. Barcelona still made history with their debut at the Montjuic Stadium.
FC Barcelona midfielder Pedri, with the assistance of Ferran Torres, successfully prevented the Catalans from breaking an unwanted 50-year record on Sunday night. They achieved this by securing their first victory of the season against Cadiz with a 2-0 win at their temporary home, the Montjuic Stadium.
While Barca made history in their debut at the Montjuic Stadium, it was Lamine Yamal who truly stole the show. Selected by Xavi to replace the suspended Raphinha, the 16-year-old became the youngest ever debutant for his boyhood club in La Liga. Yamal received a standing ovation when he was substituted after an impressive 85-minute performance. He showed great promise and was even denied a penalty in the first half after being fouled, coming close to scoring his first senior goal with a narrowly missed shot.
Barca had several legitimate penalty claims throughout the game and seemed destined to break a 53-year record. Gavi hit the crossbar with a header, and substitute Ez Abde came close to scoring with a shot that was saved by the goalkeeper. If Barca had failed to score, it would have been the first time since 1973 that they started a La Liga campaign without a goal in their first two matches.
However, with just 10 minutes remaining, Pedri, playing in an advanced false left winger position, made his presence known. After receiving a brilliant through ball from Ilkay Gundogan, Pedri fought in the box and slid his shot past Ledesma into the back of the net. The 39,000 spectators at the Montjuic Stadium erupted with joy and relief as Barca finally opened their goal account for the 2023/2024 season. This goal also meant that Barca would likely finish the evening just two points behind their arch-rivals, Real Madrid.
In the dying moments of stoppage time, Yamal's replacement, Ferran Torres, sealed the victory by doubling the scoreline. After converting the goal, Torres proudly pointed to his name and new number 7 on the back of his shirt. The Spain international undoubtedly hoped that this performance would secure him a place in Xavi's starting lineup, although displacing Yamal will not be an easy task.
Barca's next challenge will be a difficult away trip to Villarreal next Sunday, where they will face scorching temperatures at 17:30 local time during the height of the Spanish summer.
