Biden Floods Fox News with Abortion Rights Ads
President Biden's reelection campaign is running abortion rights ads on Fox News' website featuring the "Dark Brandon" meme.
President Joe Biden's reelection campaign is taking a unique approach to the upcoming Republican presidential primary debate on Fox News. They have launched a significant ad campaign on the network's website, featuring abortion rights ads styled with the popular "Dark Brandon" meme. For those unfamiliar with the meme, "Dark Brandon" is a digital alter ego of the president, created by young progressives as a response to the right's "Let's Go Brandon" joke. The ads showcase Mr. Dark Brandon himself, with a wide grin and menacing red eyes, boldly stating, "Get real, Jack. I'm bringing Roe back."
I must say, I appreciate the creativity and cleverness of Biden's campaign. They understand that abortion is a pivotal issue that resonates with people across the country. This ad campaign comes on the heels of a recent victory for abortion rights in Ohio, where voters turned out in large numbers to defeat a deliberately confusing anti-abortion ballot measure. In fact, abortion rights have triumphed in every ballot measure over the past year, including in states like Montana, Kentucky, Michigan, Kansas, California, and Vermont, before Ohio. Even Republican leaders and conservative anchors have openly acknowledged the existential threat that the "abortion issue" poses to their party.
However, despite the overwhelming popularity of abortion rights, as demonstrated by Fox News' own polls, it is worth considering whether Biden could be more direct in his pro-choice ad campaign. Biden's deputy campaign manager, Rob Flaherty, explained that the ad buy is intended to embody the "strided, swaggy Dark Brandon personality" and discuss protecting and restoring Roe. In my humble opinion, a truly confident and bold Dark Brandon would not shy away from openly addressing a popular and significant issue like abortion. It seems only fitting that he should use the word "abortion" itself.
This has been a recurring issue for the president, who has been known to avoid saying "abortion" at all costs. It was only last summer, shortly after Roe was overturned, that he finally uttered the word. Speaking plainly about abortion, particularly coming from Democratic leaders, and abandoning the usual euphemisms, would be a crucial step towards destigmatizing this normal yet contentious healthcare procedure. It is also important to recognize that simply codifying the original Roe decision will not be sufficient. Abortion has always been difficult to access, and individuals have faced criminalization for their choices regarding pregnancy outcomes. We deserve more than the minimal standards set by Roe.
To be clear, I commend Biden's campaign for venturing into hostile territory and engaging in this ad campaign, especially in anticipation of a debate that will undoubtedly delve into the candidates' stances on abortion. However, I would like to believe that the real Dark Brandon would be less timid and apologetic when it comes to an issue that profoundly affects us all.
As for where else we might see these ads, Flaherty stated, "I think it fits both the president's ethos of going everywhere and not writing off any voters. Only Dark Brandon knows where he'll appear." Perhaps we can expect to see them on Truth Social next?
