GOHSEP activates emergency operations center amid Louisiana wildfires risk
Louisiana Governor asks state agencies to address ongoing wildfires caused by record heat and drought, urging compliance with burn ban.
Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards has called upon various state agencies to address the ongoing wildfires that have been exacerbated by record-breaking heat in the state. The Governor's Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness, State Fire Marshal's Office, and other relevant agencies have been tasked with emphasizing the importance of a statewide burn ban and encouraging public compliance with the ordinance during this drought-ridden summer. The state has already experienced a significant number of wildfires, with approximately 10,000 to 12,000 acres burned in Beauregard Parish alone, leading to evacuations and a large-scale response from first responders and firefighting teams.
During a press conference, reports of additional fires across the state were received, including a marsh fire in Plaquemines Parish. The director of the Governor's Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness, Casey Tingle, emphasized that these fires pose a direct threat to the public, their families, homes, businesses, and properties. Furthermore, there is an imminent danger to the firefighters bravely battling these fires in extremely challenging and hot conditions.
Unfortunately, there is little to no relief from the weather forecasted in the near future, meaning conditions could potentially remain the same or worsen over the coming days. In response to this ongoing crisis, the Governor's Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness activated its state emergency operations center to efficiently process requests for state support from local emergency managers and coordinate the state's response to the fires in Beauregard Parish and other affected areas.
It is crucial for the public to be aware of the severity of the situation and adhere to the statewide burn ban. By doing so, individuals can help mitigate the risk of further wildfires and protect their communities. The state agencies involved are working tirelessly to combat these fires, but they require the cooperation and support of the public to ensure the safety and well-being of all residents.
