SAG-AFTRA Backs 'Dancing With the Stars' Cast Amid Strikes, Ensures Rule Compliance
DWTS cast members will not be in violation of strike rules when the show premieres its 32nd season.
SAG-AFTRA has confirmed that cast members of Dancing With the Stars (DWTS) will not be in violation of strike rules when the show premieres its 32nd season on September 26, despite pressure from the Writers Guild of America.
According to a spokesperson for SAG-AFTRA, the members appearing on DWTS are working under the Network Code agreement, which is a non-struck contract. This means that they are required to fulfill their contractual obligations and are not in violation of SAG-AFTRA strike rules. The union fully supports them in their work on the show.
The spokesperson also clarified that DWTS is considered a non-dramatic production under a separate agreement, which is not subject to the union's strike order. Many of the members on the show had pre-existing contractual obligations to the show, including option agreements that require them to return if the producer exercises their option. Therefore, these members are obligated to continue their work on DWTS.
Although SAG-AFTRA is actively supporting striking unions in the industry, it recognizes that certain members are bound by other union contracts or personal service agreements that require them to work. The union stands in solidarity with its fellow union siblings across the industry, while also acknowledging its obligations under federal labor law.
It is worth noting that DWTS includes two hosts, three judges, professional dancers, and a significant portion of its celebrity cast who are SAG-AFTRA members.
