Friday Morning Quarterback: Falcons Mix It Up
Atlanta Falcons' offense needs to diversify its plays and involve other players besides rookie running back Bijan Robinson.
In today's game in London, I unfortunately couldn't attend, but that doesn't stop me from having something to say about the Atlanta Falcons offense. It's time for them to switch things up a bit!
The Falcons started the game with the same three plays, specifically targeting rookie running back Bijan Robinson, just like they did in their last home game. However, the element of surprise is gone. Everyone knows how talented and explosive Robinson is. In my opinion, he's a strong contender for the Offensive Rookie of the Year in the National Football League. Not only is he a deadly runner, but he's also the Falcons' most reliable receiver. It's about time they start involving other players in a more significant way.
Cordarelle Patterson made his first appearance of the season and deserved more opportunities to showcase his skills. Former top-10 draft picks Kyle Pitts and Drake London had only accumulated a total of 198 receiving yards before the fourth game of the season. In contrast, Robinson leads the team with 102 receiving yards. Pitts and London had a combined 17 receptions, while Robinson had 14 before this game. He added three more catches in the first quarter in London. It's becoming repetitive.
On the other hand, Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence distributed the ball to four different players, including former Falcons receiver Calvin Ridley, who caught a deep touchdown pass from Lawrence, giving the Jaguars an early lead.
During the second quarter, Ridley took a couple of shots at London (in London, LOL), one of which was a deep pass. Tight end Jonnu Smith also caught his 10th reception of the season during that drive. The Falcons have offensive options beyond Bijan Robinson, and it's long overdue to involve them in the game.
Unfortunately, a pass intended for London was intercepted by Darius Williams and returned for a Jacksonville touchdown, putting the Falcons down 17-0. The very next offensive play, a pass for Pitts, was also intercepted. These plays feel like the end of any hope for offensive variety from the Falcons.
To be fair, Robinson made an incredible one-handed catch on third down, so it's understandable why they kept targeting him. He's undoubtedly a talent worthy of a Pro Bowl selection. However, Falcons offensive coordinator Dave Ragone needs to prioritize protecting both second-year quarterback Desmond Ridder and Robinson by diversifying their offensive strategies.
I'll update this column after the game, but I highly doubt that anything will change.
