Zach Wilson falls short against Rodgers and Swift despite silencing doubters
Zach Wilson impresses with two TDs and zero INTs in a close loss to the Chiefs, while Mahomes struggles with interceptions.
In a game where Aaron Rodgers was in attendance, Zach Wilson, the quarterback for the New York Jets, managed to redeem himself after a disappointing performance the previous week. Although the Jets ultimately lost a close game to the Kansas City Chiefs with a score of 23-20, Wilson showcased his skills by completing 28 of 39 passes for 246 yards, two touchdowns, and zero interceptions. On the other hand, it was Patrick Mahomes who struggled, only completing 18 of 30 passes for 203 yards, one touchdown, and two uncharacteristic interceptions.
Wilson began the second half by leading the Jets on an impressive 75-yard drive, culminating in a precise 10-yard touchdown pass to Allen Lazard. He then ran the ball into the end zone for a two-point conversion, tying the game at 20. This was a remarkable comeback for the Jets, who were initially trailing 17-0.
The Jets' defense was also effective, forcing Mahomes into two interceptions during the game. These interceptions matched the total number of interceptions Mahomes had thrown in the first three games of the season. On the other hand, Mahomes did achieve a significant milestone by throwing his 200th career touchdown pass. He accomplished this feat in his 84th game, surpassing the NFL record held by Hall of Famer Dan Marino. However, Mahomes' two interceptions in the first half brought his total to three for the year.
It is worth noting that Mahomes' highest number of interceptions in a single game is three, which occurred on three separate occasions, all of which were away games. The first instance happened on November 19, 2018, against the Los Angeles Rams. The second occurred on December 13, 2020, against the Miami Dolphins, and the third was on December 11, 2022, against the Denver Broncos.
Despite these challenging performances, Mahomes managed to secure victories in two out of the three games where he threw three interceptions, particularly when facing AFC teams. Interestingly, fans attributed Mahomes' struggles to the presence of Taylor Swift at MetLife Stadium. Swift was there to support her rumored partner, Travis Kelce, who is a teammate of Mahomes.
Wilson's impressive performance was briefly halted in the fourth quarter when the Jets turned the ball over for the first time. This turnover disrupted a drive with the Jets trailing by three points. Wilson had difficulty handling the snap, resulting in Tershawn Wharton of the Chiefs recovering the ball for Kansas City.
During the broadcast, Cris Collinsworth compared Wilson to Rodgers, stating that playing quarterback at a higher level than what Wilson demonstrated was nearly impossible. Collinsworth referred to Wilson's throws in the third quarter as "perfect," which was the complete opposite of the criticism Wilson faced from the crowd during the Jets' loss to the New England Patriots the previous week.
Despite the loss to Kansas City, Wilson will have the opportunity to continue his exceptional form in the Jets' Week 5 game against the Denver Broncos. The Jets will be playing in the Mile High City with hopes of securing a win against a team that has only won once this season.
