In the new trailer for Netflix's "Leave the World Behind," Julia Roberts and Ethan Hawke portray parents who are confronted with a global catastrophe while on vacation. Roberts, who was recently seen at the Gucci fashion show in Milan, plays Amanda Sanford, while Hawke takes on the role of her husband Clay. The couple is joined by their children Archie and Rose, played by Charlie Evans and Farrah Mackenzie, respectively. The trailer begins with Clay opening the door to their vacation home in Long Island, only to be greeted by a mysterious stranger named G.H. Scott, portrayed by Mahershala Ali. G.H. informs them of the impending global catastrophe.
As G.H. and his wife Ruth, played by Myha'la Herrold, are invited inside, Amanda questions why they have come. G.H. explains that in his line of work, understanding the patterns that govern the world can help predict the future. He turns on a satellite phone, and we witness the satellite miles above the Earth responding to it. G.H. cryptically mentions that he knew something was coming, while a shot of Danny, played by Kevin Bacon, loading bottled water into his truck hints at the impending danger.
Amanda expresses confusion, prompting Ruth to point to the television broadcasting news alerts about ongoing cyberattacks across the country. G.H. ominously states that the truth is much scarier, and as Amanda asks for clarification, their window cracks. Clay, driving his car, witnesses something terrifying and quickly turns around as a red mist falls from the sky.
The trailer introduces Archie, who, in the midst of the chaos, seeks reassurance by asking if they will be okay. Amanda tries to comfort Rose, but another shot suggests that their situation is dire, with Amanda driving at high speed out of fear. Ruth questions G.H., referencing his previous statement about paranoia, and Danny remarks that everyone has been deserted.
An aerial shot reveals a freeway filled with abandoned cars, while G.H. prepares for a flood. G.H. asserts that there is no returning to normalcy, bringing the trailer to a close. "Leave the World Behind," adapted for the screen and directed by Sam Esmail, known for his work on "Mr. Robot," is based on Rumaan Alam's bestselling book. The film will have a limited theatrical release starting on November 22 before arriving on Netflix on December 1.
