"PS5 Slim vs. Launch Version and Xbox: An In-Depth Comparison"

Sony has announced slimmer versions of the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Digital Edition, with reduced volume and weight. The new models have 1TB of storage and the option to add an Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive. The PS5 Digital Edition has gone up in price by $50 compared to the launch model.

Sony has recently announced that slimmer versions of the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Digital Edition will be released just in time for the holidays. This news has sparked curiosity among gamers who are eager to see how these new models compare to the original PS5s, as well as the Xbox Series X/S.

To give us a rough idea of the size difference, IGN's Armando Torres created a size comparison using the disc drive and controller. From the mock-up, it is clear that the new PS5s are smaller in size compared to their predecessors.

According to Sony, the new PS5 has been reduced in volume by more than 30% and weight by 18% and 24% compared to the previous models. The original PS5 measured 390 mm x 260 mm x 104 mm (15.4 in x 10.2 in x 4.1 in), while the new model will be approximately 358 mm x 96 mm x 216 mm (14.0 in x 3.7 in x 8.5 in).

As for the PS5 Digital Edition, the launch model measured 390 mm x 260 mm x 92 mm (15.3 in x 10.2 in x 3.6 in), while the new version will be 358 mm x 80 mm x 216 mm (14.0 in x 3.1 in x 8.5 in).

In comparison, the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S have distinct dimensions that set them apart from both the old and new PS5s. The Xbox Series X measures 152.4 mm x 304.8 mm x 152.4 mm (6.0 in x 12.0 in x 6.0 in), while the Xbox Series S is 279 mm x 149.8 mm x 66.0 mm (11.0 in x 5.9 in x 2.6 in).

While the new PS5s may not be more powerful than the launch models, there are some notable differences. Both models now come with 1TB of storage, an upgrade from the 825GB offered in the original models. Additionally, Sony is giving users the option to add an Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive to the PS5 Digital Edition at any time for an additional $79.99. The new models also feature four separate cover panels, with the top two having a glossy finish and the bottom panel remaining matte.

It's worth mentioning that the new PS5 Digital Edition has seen a price increase of $50 compared to the launch model. The new PS5 model with the Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive pre-installed will be priced at $499.99, the same as the original model. The new PS5 Digital Edition will now cost $449.99 instead of $399.99.

In addition to the consoles, Sony will be selling a new vertical stand for $29.99, which will be compatible with both models. A horizontal stand will also be included with the consoles.
