Sonic Superstars Launch Trailer
Sonic Superstars, the new 2D Sonic game, has been released with a launch trailer showcasing gameplay and new features. It is available on multiple platforms and has received positive reviews so far. The future of Sonic includes a new game in 2024 and upcoming TV and film projects.
Sonic Superstars, the highly anticipated new game from Sega, has finally been released, and to celebrate, the company has unveiled an exciting launch trailer. The trailer kicks off with a captivating cinematic sequence featuring Sonic, Knuckles, Tails, and Amy facing off against their arch-nemeses: Dr. Eggman, Fang the Hunter, and the clumsy yet formidable Trip. The action then transitions to gameplay footage, showcasing the game's thrilling mechanics, such as the Chaos Emerald powers, four-player co-op, and the intense Battle Mode.
Available now on multiple platforms, including Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, Sonic Superstars is the first 2D Sonic game since the beloved Sonic Mania in 2017. While Sonic Mania embraced a nostalgic pixel-art style, Sonic Superstars has opted for stunning 3D character designs. Sonic Team boss Takashi Iizuki has expressed his belief that pixel art may not be sustainable in the future, which explains the shift in visual direction for this latest installment.
As reviews for Sonic Superstars begin to surface, the game is currently holding a respectable score of 75 on Metacritic, based on 36 critic reviews. While this falls slightly short of Sonic Mania's score of 86, it is still considered a positive reception. Sonic fans who have eagerly awaited the game can take solace in the fact that Sonic Team and Arzest have delivered an enjoyable experience, according to most critics.
Looking ahead, the future of the Sonic franchise remains uncertain. With Sonic Superstars now available and all downloadable content released for Sonic Frontiers, Sega's next move is shrouded in mystery. Reports suggest that a new Sonic game will be released in 2024, although details are scarce at this point. Considering Sonic Frontiers' release in 2022, it is possible that this upcoming title will be a new 3D installment in the series. Sonic Team has indicated that the open zone format introduced in Sonic Frontiers will serve as the foundation for future 3D Sonic games, with plans to refine and expand upon this formula in subsequent releases.
While the video game future of Sonic may be uncertain, the iconic character continues to thrive in other forms of media. A third Sonic the Hedgehog movie is currently in development, along with a live-action spin-off series centered around the beloved character Knuckles. The Knuckles series will be available on Paramount+, while fans can enjoy the first two seasons of the animated series Sonic Prime on Netflix. Furthermore, a third season of Sonic Prime is expected to debut in early 2024, promising even more excitement for Sonic enthusiasts.
