Mecole Hardman returning to Chiefs in trade from Jets

Mecole Hardman is reuniting with the Chiefs after being traded by the New York Jets, giving Kansas City another weapon on offense.

The Kansas City Chiefs and Mecole Hardman are reuniting once again, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. In a trade with the New York Jets, the Chiefs are sending a sixth-round pick in exchange for Hardman and a seventh-round pick. This move brings the fifth-year wide receiver back to the team that originally drafted him in the second round of the 2019 draft. After four seasons in Kansas City, Hardman joined the Jets in free agency last year.

During his time with the Chiefs, Hardman showcased his talent and speed, earning a Pro Bowl selection as a return specialist in his rookie year. He also played a crucial role in the team's two Super Bowl victories. As a rookie, he averaged an impressive 20.7 yards per reception on 26 catches, scoring six touchdowns.

However, Hardman struggled to maintain his rookie success in the subsequent seasons, failing to average more than 13.7 yards per reception. Despite this, he remained a valuable contributor to Kansas City's offense. In 2021, he had his most productive season, recording 59 catches for 693 yards and two touchdowns.

Since joining the Jets this season, Hardman has been largely ineffective, making only one catch for six yards in six games. Returning to Kansas City will likely provide him with more opportunities to showcase his skills, especially with quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who is familiar with his playing style.

Although the Chiefs have had a strong start to their Super Bowl defense with a 5-1 record, they could benefit from additional depth at the wide receiver position. Currently, rookie Rashee Rice leads the Chiefs' wide receivers with 40.8 yards per game, but there is no clear number two option alongside All-Pro tight end Travis Kelce.

While Hardman may not immediately fill that role, his presence will give Mahomes another weapon and add a speed dynamic to an already potent offense. The Chiefs will welcome his return, especially considering the minimal cost of a late-round draft swap.
