In an interview with Star Sports following New Zealand's innings, Gavaskar highlighted Santner's potential to make a significant impact in the middle overs of the game, similar to the contributions made by Indian bowlers Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja. Prior to the match against India, Santner was the joint-highest wicket-taker in the tournament, having taken 11 wickets in four matches.
