"Giants Tyrod Taylor Discharged from Hospital After Rib Injury vs Jets"
New York Giants quarterback Tyrod Taylor discharged from hospital after rib injury. Backup QB Tommy DeVito takes over.
New York Giants quarterback Tyrod Taylor has been released from the hospital after spending the night following a rib injury in Sunday's game against the New York Jets, as reported by ESPN's Adam Schefter. According to Schefter, Taylor's status is considered week-to-week.
The injury occurred during the second quarter, and Taylor was subsequently ruled out of the game. He was taken to the hospital for further evaluation. The incident happened when Jets linebacker C.J. Mosley tackled Taylor, causing him to land awkwardly.
With starting quarterback Daniel Jones already sidelined for the third consecutive week, third-string quarterback Tommy DeVito stepped in to replace Taylor. ESPN's Field Yates reports that running back Saquon Barkley will serve as the backup quarterback for the rest of the game.
DeVito, an undrafted player from Illinois, made his NFL debut on Sunday. This was his first opportunity to showcase his skills at the professional level.
This is not the first time Taylor has dealt with injuries that have affected his playing time. In the 2020 season with the Los Angeles Chargers, Taylor suffered two cracked ribs during the first drive of the season. Additionally, a team doctor accidentally punctured his lung while attempting to administer pain-killing medication before Week 2 of that season. Taylor did not start another game for the Chargers and filed a lawsuit against the team doctor in 2021, claiming that the punctured lung cost him his starting position.
Taylor's tenure as a starter with the Buffalo Bills was also cut short due to multiple concussions in 2017. He started the first three games of the 2018 season for the Cleveland Browns before suffering his third concussion in just over a year.
After his time with the Chargers, Taylor started the first two games of the 2021 season for the Houston Texans but was then sidelined by a hamstring injury for six games. In December, he suffered a wrist injury that contributed to him losing his starting job.
The Giants are hoping for better luck with injuries for Taylor this season, as he will be needed in the immediate future. While the team does not believe Jones' neck injury is season-ending, they are taking a cautious approach to his return due to "significant weakness in his left (non-throwing) arm," according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero.
At the time of his injury, Taylor had recorded eight yards on 4-of-7 passing and had been sacked twice. He also rushed five times for 33 yards. In his previous two starts, he averaged 239.5 passing yards and a touchdown per game for the Giants.
