Jets get win over Giants in overtime; Syracuse QB Tommy DeVito shines
The Jets staged an unlikely comeback to stun the Giants with a 13-10 victory in a defensive struggle.
In a thrilling match between the Jets and the Giants, Greg Zuerlein emerged as the hero with two clutch field goals to secure a stunning comeback victory for the Jets. The game ended with a final score of 13-10 in favor of the Jets.
The Jets' winning drive was set up by a pass interference penalty against Adoree Jackson, which gave them a crucial first down at the 15-yard line. Coach Robert Saleh made the bold decision to rely on his kicker rather than risk a potential mistake from the offense. Zuerlein delivered, putting his kick just inside the left upright to seal the Jets' third consecutive win.
The loss was a bitter disappointment for the Giants, who allowed the Jets to tie the game with a field goal in the final seconds of regulation. The Jets moved an impressive 58 yards in just four plays, utilizing the arm of Zach Wilson, who completed consecutive 29-yard passes to Garrett Wilson and Allen Lazard. This allowed the Jets to spike the ball and stop the clock with 1 second remaining.
Wilson had a solid performance, completing 17 of 36 passes for 240 yards. Garrett Wilson was his favorite target, hauling in seven catches for 100 yards. On the defensive side, Kayvon Thibodeaux was a standout for the Giants, recording three sacks.
The Giants' offense suffered a setback when starting quarterback Tyrod Taylor left the game with a rib injury in the second quarter. Practice squad quarterback Tommy DeVito took over and managed to give the Giants a brief lead with a 6-yard touchdown run early in the second half. However, DeVito struggled in the passing game, completing just 2 of 7 passes for minus-1 yard. He was sacked twice.
Running back Saquon Barkley had a strong performance for the Giants, rushing for 128 yards on 36 carries. However, the Giants' passing game was virtually nonexistent, finishing with a measly minus-9 net yards passing, the lowest in a game since 2000.
Both teams showcased their defensive prowess throughout the game, resulting in a low-scoring affair. The first half was particularly dominated by defense, with a combined total of only 201 yards in offense, eight first downs, and an 0-for-18 conversion rate on third downs.
In terms of injuries, the Jets lost center Connor McGovern and defensive lineman Al Wood during the game. For the Giants, in addition to Taylor's rib injury, tight end Darren Waller aggravated a hamstring injury and was ruled out in the second quarter.
Looking ahead, the Jets will face the Los Angeles Chargers next Monday night in what promises to be another exciting matchup.
