Ohio State No. 1 in first CFP rankings, surpassing Georgia and Michigan
Ohio State is ranked No. 1 in the initial College Football Playoff rankings, with Georgia coming in at No. 2.
In the latest College Football Playoff rankings, Ohio State emerged as the top team in the nation, surpassing two-time defending national champion Georgia. Despite Georgia's impressive 25-game winning streak, the selection committee deemed Ohio State as the best team in the country. Michigan and Florida State also secured top-four spots in the playoff rankings.
Last season, Georgia narrowly defeated Ohio State in the CFP semifinals with a score of 42-41. However, this year, Ohio State has been dominant, recording five victories by a margin of 20 or more points. Their biggest challenge awaits on November 25 when they face off against Michigan in a highly anticipated Big Ten showdown.
Washington and Oregon, both from the Pac-12 conference, were the first two teams to miss out on the top four spots. Washington handed Oregon their only loss of the season. Texas and Alabama secured the No. 7 and No. 8 spots, respectively, with Oklahoma and Ole Miss rounding out the top ten.
Penn State, Missouri, Louisville, LSU, and Notre Dame followed closely behind in the rankings. Oregon State, Utah, UCLA, and Southern California represented the Pac-12 in the rankings, with Tennessee also making the list.
The Big 12 conference claimed the No. 21, No. 22, and No. 23 spots with Kansas, Oklahoma State, and Kansas State, respectively. Tulane from the American Athletic Conference and Air Force from the Mountain West Conference were the highest-ranked non-power conference teams, vying for a spot in a New Year's Six bowl game.
Overall, Ohio State has emerged as the top team in the nation, surpassing Georgia's reign as the two-time defending national champion. With their dominant performances this season, Ohio State is poised to make a strong run in the College Football Playoff.
