Beloved Thanksgiving sweet potato casserole with marshmallows: Why?

Many people have rage at Thanksgiving dinners due to bitter politics, poor holiday etiquette, and the sweet potato casserole with marshmallows.

Thanksgiving dinner can be a source of rage for many people due to bitter political disputes, poor holiday etiquette, and familial foes. For some, the rage is sparked by a certain dish that is enjoyed by many during the holiday season: sweet potato casserole with marshmallows. The creation of this dish is deemed an abomination by some, including myself, and the reasons for its appeal remain a mystery.

The texture and taste of sweet potato casserole with marshmallows are particularly unpleasant. The combination of warm, mushy sweet potatoes and ooey-gooey marshmallows feels like a grown-up version of baby food puree. The caramelized sweet potatoes are outshined by the artificial, sugary sweetness of the marshmallows, and some marshmallows even taste like soap, depending on the gelatin used.

The dish was first created in the early 1900s by a company named Angelus Marshmallows, and it remains a quintessential Thanksgiving dish that is eaten by the masses annually. The company sought to encourage more Americans to enjoy marshmallows on a daily basis and reached out to a cooking school founder to help formulate recipes that featured marshmallows as an everyday ingredient.

Today, fans of the dish share their go-to recipes on Reddit, with many raving about the deliciousness of the casserole. However, my sentiments regarding sweet potato marshmallow casserole seem to be in the minority, as many people agree that the dish is more delectable than disgusting. Unfortunately, my hatred for the dish is not based on hypotheticals, as I have had it many times growing up.

As expected, I will not be eating sweet potato casserole topped with marshmallows this Thanksgiving. My opinions about the dish are pretty set in stone, and I am unwilling to change them anytime soon. Sweet potatoes and marshmallows should exist as separate entities, and I do not want them served together as a side dish, main entree, or dessert. In my books, there's no happy ever after for the sweet potato and the marshmallow because I don't want them together ever.
