Nick Singleton has not been performing like the same player he was last year, when he was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year. He has struggled to make the same kind of explosive runs that he was known for during the 2022 season. His numbers have taken a significant dip this year, with his rushing yards per game dropping from 81.6 to 53.1, his yards per carry falling from 6.8 to 4.0, and his touchdowns decreasing from 12 to 7.
Despite these statistics, head coach James Franklin believes that Singleton has actually improved as a football player, especially in terms of blocking and receiving. He has become more active as a receiver, nearly doubling his catches and yards this season. Franklin also emphasized that Singleton's contributions go beyond the numbers, highlighting his improvement as a well-rounded player.
While Singleton's explosive runs may have diminished, he has excelled in other areas. He ranks second in the Big Ten in kickoff returns and fifth in all-purpose yards, with 1,040 and 94.5 per game, respectively. Additionally, Penn State defensive coordinator Manny Diaz has been named a semifinalist for the Broyles Award, recognizing him as one of the nation's top assistant coaches.
It is clear that Singleton's performance this season cannot be solely judged based on statistics. Franklin believes that Singleton's growth as a player this year sets him up for future success, both at Penn State and beyond. While the numbers may not reflect it, Singleton's contributions to the team extend far beyond his rushing yards and touchdowns.
