Tulane football winning streak boosts local merchandise sales
Tulane football success leads to booming merchandise sales for local businesses, with sales increasing by 180% and royalties up 50%.
Tulane University's football program has been on the rise in recent years, and the team's success on the field is not only benefiting the players and fans but also local businesses, particularly those selling Tulane merchandise.
After an impressive 12-2 season and a victory over the University of Southern California in the Cotton Bowl, Tulane has continued its success in 2023, clinching the American Athletic Conference title and securing a spot in the College Football Playoff. With 14 wins in their last 15 games and an overall record of 10-1, the Green Wave is riding high on their recent accomplishments.
Dave Cariello, owner of Campus Connection, a store specializing in Tulane gear, has seen a significant boost in sales thanks to the team's performance. He reported a 180% increase in sales last year, with an additional 80% increase this year, attributing the surge to the team's victories, including their win in the 2022 AAC Championship game.
According to Cariello, some of the fastest-selling items include striped overalls and game bibs, with students opting for a minimalist approach to their outfits, preferring to show as much skin as possible.
The surge in sales is not only driven by students but also by locals, fans, and alumni eager to show their support for Tulane. Gabe DeLatte, assistant athletic director for equipment and licensing at Tulane, noted that the expanded fan base has led to a growing demand for Tulane-branded merchandise, with royalties increasing by 50% and approximately 300 new requests for licensees in the last fiscal year.
The team's success is not only good for business but also for morale. Cariello expressed his enjoyment of the team's achievements, not only as a business owner but also as a fan and alumnus. He expressed his desire to see the team's success continue in the future.
For those looking to support the Green Wave, Campus Connection is located at 800 Broadway St. More information can be found on their website and Instagram. Tulane's next game against the USTC Roadrunners will be broadcast on WGNO-ABC at 2:30 p.m.
