Freshman QB Brock Glenn makes first start for Florida State in potential CFP berth game
FSU's freshman quarterback Brock Glenn makes his first start in the ACC championship game against Louisville due to injuries.
Brock Glenn, a freshman quarterback, made his first career start for No. 4 Florida State in the Atlantic Coast Conference championship game against No. 15 Louisville. The potential trip to the College Football Playoff was on the line for the Seminoles. Glenn had only attempted four passes in his career before this game.
Last week's starter, Tate Rodemaker, was dealing with concussion symptoms after a win over Florida and was limited in practice leading up to the championship game. Although Rodemaker warmed up before the game, he was not in pads when it began.
Florida State had previously lost Heisman Trophy candidate and ACC player of the year Jordan Travis to a season-ending left leg injury, sparking debate about whether the Seminoles belonged in the playoff even if they won against Louisville, as they would not be at full strength.
Rodemaker, who had only started two games, left the previous week's game in the fourth quarter after getting hit in the head while sliding, resulting in a targeting call against the Gators. Although he initially passed the on-field concussion test, he began experiencing symptoms the following day. As a result, Brock Glenn got the bulk of the work leading up to the championship game.
The absence of key players has complicated the decision for the CFP selection committee, especially after No. 8 Alabama's win over No. 1 Georgia in the Southeastern Conference championship game. Despite the challenges, Florida State coach Mike Norvell stated that the game plan wouldn't change much if Glenn was pressed into playing.
