Patrick Mahomes complains about controversial penalty to Josh Allen
Patrick Mahomes upset with officials over penalty nullifying go-ahead touchdown, caught on video, controversy ensues, NFL defends call.
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was visibly frustrated with the officials after an offsides penalty against receiver Kadarius Toney nullified a go-ahead touchdown. Mahomes' frustration continued after the game, as he expressed his disbelief to Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen. The Kansas City quarterback was overheard telling Allen that the penalty on Toney was "The wildest call I've ever seen," and later added that it was "terrible." The video of this interaction was shared on Twitter by Thad Brown of Rochester's CBS affiliate, WROC.
The Chiefs had appeared to take the lead over the Bills with just over one minute remaining in the game, but the touchdown was nullified due to a rare offensive offsides call against Toney. Despite Allen praising the call as "the ballsiest play I've ever seen," Kansas City's joy was short-lived. Mahomes threw three incomplete passes after the penalty, resulting in a turnover on downs and allowing Buffalo to run out the clock.
While Toney faced criticism for his mistake, Mahomes directed his frustration towards the officials, even needing to be restrained by teammates and coaches while yelling at an official. The penalty was not up for debate, as Toney was clearly offsides. Mahomes later complained that teams are typically given a warning about offensive offsides before they are flagged. NFL senior VP of officiating Walt Anderson and referee Carl Cheffers both defended the call, stating that Toney's offsides was "egregious."
