Jack Hughes scores OT Devils 2-1 win Bruins
New Jersey Devils beat Boston Bruins 2-1 in overtime. Jack Hughes scores with 2:13 left. Dawson Mercer also scored.
When the New Jersey Devils head into overtime, Jack Hughes takes over. On Wednesday night, Hughes scored with 2:13 to play in overtime to help the Devils rally to beat the Boston Bruins 2-1, despite an outstanding 34-save effort by Jeremy Swayman.
This was Hughes' sixth career overtime winner, and second this season. He played 1:57 of the extra session, and his coach Lindy Ruff praised his incredible skating ability and readiness to seize the opportunity.
Hughes took a pass from Jesper Bratt and scored the game-winning goal, his 11th of the season. Mercer also tied the game in the third period, and Vanecek made 24 saves as the Devils won for the seventh time in nine games.
The Bruins, who are now 13-1-3 when leading after two periods, got a goal from Morgan Geekie. Swayman, who fell to 9-1-3, played a big game, but Mercer's goal early in the third period helped the Devils keep battling.
Vanecek and the Devils' defense kept New Jersey close throughout the game, and the Bruins played without defenseman Charlie McAvoy and top-line center Pavel Zacha due to injuries.
The Bruins will face the Islanders next, while the Devils are set to play against Columbus on Saturday.
