Gillian Anderson Golden Globes gown custom vulva-covered
Gillian Anderson makes a feminist statement at the Golden Globes with a custom gown featuring embroidered vulvas. Iconic!
At the 81st Golden Globe Awards, Gillian Anderson made a powerful feminist statement with her fashion choice. The American-British actor arrived in a custom ivory gown from Gabriela Hearst that initially appeared simple, but upon closer inspection, featured an eye-catching motif.
The strapless silk corset gown had a bell skirt embroidered with an intricate series of vulvas, a bold and empowering choice that would make Anderson's Sex Education character proud. The hand-sewn anatomical decorations were done in a white thread that subtly contrasted against the cream gown. According to the official Gabriela Hearst Instagram account, the dress was made in New York City at the in-house studio, with each motif taking approximately 3.5 hours to embroider.
Styled by Martha Ward, Anderson paired the custom gown with silver strappy heeled sandals from Aquazzura and a matching silver semicircular mini pouch, also from Aquazzura. She completed the look with jewelry from Chopard. Anderson took to Instagram to express her pleasure in collaborating with Gabriela Hearst on the beautiful custom embroidered dress, and also credited her makeup artist, Sage Maitri DiRodio, and her hairstylist, Ian James.
In a conversation with British Vogue, Anderson explained the inspiration behind the gown, stating, "Since my Instagram presence has been highlighting yonis [the Sanskrit word for womb or vagina] since Sex Education landed on Netflix and with the mantra of my brand G-Spot being to 'prioritize pleasure,' I wanted to bring this element into the design ... I'm so pleased Gabriela was up for the challenge!" This fashion statement by Gillian Anderson at the Golden Globes exemplifies her commitment to using her platform to advocate for women's empowerment and sexual positivity.
