Sports Illustrated layoffs, brand name license revoked
Sports Illustrated publisher plans significant layoffs after revocation of brand's license, with possible loss of all staff. Union fights back.
It has been reported that the publisher of Sports Illustrated is planning to lay off a significant portion, if not all, of its staff after its license to use the iconic brand's name in print and digital was revoked. The Arena Group, which operates Sports Illustrated and related properties, sent an email to employees notifying them of the license revocation by Authentic Brands Group. This has led to the decision to lay off staff working on the SI brand.
The employee union representing Sports Illustrated workers has stated that the layoffs could affect a significant number, and possibly all, of the NewsGuild workers. They have emphasized their commitment to fighting for fair treatment of workers and the maintenance of the publication's standards.
The guild has also called on Authentic Brands Group to ensure the continued publication of SI and allow it to serve its audience as it has for nearly 70 years. The Arena Group acquired publishing rights from ABG in 2019 for at least 10 years, but their stewardship of SI has faced numerous challenges, including the firing of the CEO in December and changes in the magazine's publishing frequency.
Sports Illustrated has faced a tumultuous few years, with changes in ownership and publication frequency. It was acquired by Meredith Publishing in 2018 as part of the purchase of Time Inc., and less than a year later, its intellectual property was sold to Authentic Brands Group. The brand, known for featuring iconic sports stories and personalities, has faced challenges in recent years and is now grappling with the potential loss of a significant portion of its staff.
