Ohio University graduate Ocean Eiler's journey from web design to PBS KIDS. He crafts his designs with urban and rural areas in mind.

Ocean Eiler graduated from Ohio University in 2002 with a major in interactive multimedia and graphic design. Originally planning to work abroad and then move to California, Eiler's plans changed due to the Dot.com Bust. He found a part-time position at WOUB in the graphics department and worked as a digital production assistant, helping with web design.

After a year at WOUB, Eiler became a web master at Pixels and Ink Inc., then moved on to work at digital marketing agencies. Seeking a more meaningful job, Eiler attended a job fair and was offered positions at XM Radio and PBS KIDS. He chose PBS KIDS and started as a web designer in 2008, eventually becoming the associate director, design and sound for PBS KIDS Interactive.

Eiler's time at WOUB and in Athens has been influential in his career, shaping his approach to design. He ensures that his designs are accessible and functional in both urban and rural areas, considering factors such as slow internet speeds. With the COVID-19 pandemic, Eiler has focused on creating shows and games to help children during this challenging time, aiming to provide an equitable experience for all users, regardless of their internet speed.

Eiler's career journey has been an adventure in crafting a unique and fulfilling career, and he remains grateful for the lessons learned in Athens. His work at PBS KIDS reflects his commitment to providing the best experience for all users, incorporating lessons learned from his time in Athens and his understanding of the diverse needs of children and communities.
